He worked at a nursery during high school learning more about plant propagation\, plant diseases\, and nutritional needs. \nAs a former school principal\, Jim involved the entire school in restoring and certifying acreage behind the school as a wildlife habitat. He has a strong interest in native plants and their uses by indigenous tribes. Jim volunteers at Tsuru Island Japanese Garden and coordinates a community garden in Gresham. He also serves on the Urban Forestry Subcommittee for the city of Gresham. His perennial garden at home contains more than 150 different plant species.
