SUMMARY:Ikebana for Every Season
DESCRIPTION:The Art of Ikebana\nIkebana is one of the traditional Japanese art forms that uses plant and other materials and was established in the 15th century though the origin goes back farther. \nIkebana has three main components: the natural material (flowers\, tree branches\, leaves\, conifer needles)\, the vase\, and the kenzan (a holder for strengthening the stem and keeping it in the desired position). The basic aesthetic principle of ikebana is refined simplicity\, achieved by bringing out the natural beauty of the material\, which determines the bouquet’s asymmetrical composition and contrasting colors and textures. \nWhat to Expect\nIn these workshops\, Nana Bellerud covers the basic concept\, techniques\, tools and equipment\, and plant care for ikebana. No tools are necessary. Participants may use the Garden’s vases and tools for the workshop. \nParticipants will make 1 basic style and 1 freestyle of Ikebana with emphasis on seasonal themes. This workshop is limited to 9 students for an interactive experience. Class will be held in the Gresham Japanese Garden’s Kyoudou Center. GJG’s building is located at the south end of Main City Park. It is the last building closest to Springwater Trail. There is a parking lot there too. \n\n\n\n\nNana Bellerud\, Ikebana Instructor\nNana G. Bellerud has been studying the Sogetsu School of Ikebana since 2005 and continues to be inspired and have new insights from its teachings. Nana demonstrates\, exhibits\, and teaches ikebana at a wide range of venues including the Portland Art Museum\, Portland Japanese Garden\, and Leach Botanical Garden. Through her demonstrations and workshops\, she seeks to introduce others to the art of ikebana and to intrigue and inspire them. Beyond simply producing a beautiful work of art with flowers and natural objects\, she shows her audience how ikebana explores artistic concepts such as balance\, contrast\, and negative space. Nana is currently serving as Branch Director of Sogetsu Portland and is a past President of Ikebana International Portland Chapter #47.

SUMMARY:Pine Pruning for Character
DESCRIPTION:Watch Laura Dufala with Bentwood Tree Farm unlock the hidden character of pine trees\, both for the aesthetics and the health of the pine tree. Laura will work on black\, white\, and shore pines on Tsuru Island. \nLaura Dufala\nLaura arrived in the Willamette Valley after growing up on the family’s potato farm in Southeastern Idaho\, the last of fourteen kids! She loved the beauty and solitude of the farm and nearby mountains. Those connections are expressed in her trees\, her art\, and her gardens. \nLaura feels very fortunate to live in the Pacific Northwest where the soil so rich and fertile grounds\, because of the Glacier Lake Missoula Floods. \nShe has work in it the industry for many years. She has shared her extensive plant knowledge and creative energy with retail and wholesale nurseries in the Portland area. It was upon finding choice ground in Boring\, Oregon that she began pouring her artist talents into Black Sheep Nursery\, focusing on Bonsai and Niwaki. When not sculpting pine trees she’s in a studio sculpting clay or carving wood. \nHer other passions center around her family\, veggie gardens\, and fine food.

SUMMARY:Ikebana for Every Season
DESCRIPTION:Ikebana is one of the traditional Japanese art forms that uses plant and other materials and was established in the 15th century though the origin goes back farther. . \nIkebana has three main components: the natural material (flowers\, tree branches\, leaves\, or conifer needles)\, the vase\, and the kendzan (a device for strengthening the stem and keeping it in the desired position). The basic aesthetic principle of Ikebana is refined simplicity\, achieved by bringing out the natural beauty of the material\, which determines the bouquet’s asymmetrical composition and contrasting colors and textures. \nIn these series of workshops\, Nana Bellerud will cover the basic concept\, techniques\, tools and equipment\, and plant care for Ikebana. Participants may use the Garden’s vases and tools during the class or purchase a Starter Kit. \nParticipants will make 1 basic style and 1 freestyle of Ikebana with emphasis on seasonal themes. \nClass will be held in the Resource Center (South end of Main City Park\, building closest to Springwater Trail). \n\n\n\n\nLimited to 9 participants. \nINSTRUCTOR: NANA BELLERUD \nNana G.
