SUMMARY:Hands on Pruning a Japanese Garden - Summer-25
DESCRIPTION:For the intermediate pruners\, a hands-on opportunity to prune a variety of plants at a Japanese garden in Boring\, OR\, learning alongside Francheska Snyder\, a professional ornamental pruner. This workshop will focus on vine maples and upright Acer palmatums. You must be comfortable on tall ladders. \nThe Gresham Japanese Garden’s prune the Japanese garden at Vanport International three times a year. There are many shrubs and trees that need restored to their intended size and brought back to the vision of the original garden designer\, Hoichi Kurisu. \nThis workshop is certified by the Oregon Landscape Contractors Board. Licensed landscape construction professionals receive five Continuing Education Hours (CEH). \n

On the property of Bateman Carroll in Gresham\, OR sits a overgrown\, unattended lace leaf acer palmatum. Limited to five students for an optimal pruning experience you will work with Francheska to get this lace leaf maple back to a beautiful focal point on Powell Blvd. \nTo gain more knowledge\, GJG recommends students to participate in Lincoln Proud’s instructional class on pruning lace leaf maples. In the Pacific Northwest our evergreen shrubs can grow out of control. Francheska will show you how to prune your shrubs so they keep their beauty\, and/or get them back to a manageable environment. \nExample of broadleaf evergreens you may have in your yard: \n\nBoxwood (Buxus microphylla)\nRhododendrons\nAzaleas\nYew (Taxus x media)s\nViburnums\nBarberry (Berberis x)\n\nFrancheska Snyder\nFrancheska Snyder is the current owner/operator of Niwa Method\, a landscape business specializing\nin Japanese gardens. She has previously worked at the Portland Japanese Garden\, Shofuso Japanese\nHouse and Garden\, and Wyck Historic House and Garden. She holds a certificate in Ornamental Horticulture\,\na 3rd Term Master Level certificate from the Ohara School of Ikebana and is a recognized\nChanticleer Scholar. She also uses her time and talent on the board of Leach Botanical Garden\, and now\nconsulting and teaching for the Gresham Japanese Garden.
