He has a strong interest in native plants and their uses by indigenous tribes. Jim volunteers at Tsuru Island Japanese Garden and coordinates a community garden in Gresham. He also serves on the Urban Forestry Subcommittee for the city of Gresham. His perennial garden at home contains more than 150 different plant species.
