SUMMARY:Sculptural Bonsai Container Workshop: 2-Part Series
DESCRIPTION:Create a sculptural\, slab-based oval bonsai container by hand in this two-part ceramic workshop atBentwood Nursery in Laura Dufala’s studio. Using slab-building techniques and rich brown clay\,participants will design and build a shallow\, one-of-a-kind bonsai vessel that balancesfunction with artistic expression. \nInspired by traditional bonsai aesthetics as well as contemporary ceramic form\, this workshopencourages organic shapes\, subtle asymmetry\, texture\, and landscape-inspired surfaces ratherthan rigid symmetry or conventional pottery forms. Participants will be invited to think aboutthe character and feeling of a future bonsai while shaping their container—whether windswept\,quiet and balanced\, rugged\, or terrain-like in form. A selection of authentic bonsai containerbooks and references will be available during the workshop for inspiration and design exploration. \nPart One: Build (September 20\, 2026)\nParticipants will design and hand-build a custom bonsai oval container no larger than 7” x 5” usingslab-building techniques with rich deep chocolate clay. \n\nHow to roll and compress slabs evenly\nCutting and assembling walls for clean joints\nCreating drainage holes (essential for bonsai health)\nAdding feet and structural support\nSurface texture or simple decorative elements\n\nSkills level: Beginner–IntermediateDuration: ~2–3 hours \nPart Two: Glaze: After drying\, participants return to glaze and finish container (October 4\, 2026)\n\nChoose glaze\nTechniques: brushing\, dipping\, or layering\nHow glaze affects texture and final color\nFunctional glazing considerations (interior vs exterior)\n\nDuration: ~1.5–2 hours \nMaterials & Tools Included\n\nBrown clay\nRolling slabs/tools (rollers\, ribs\, knives)\nSlip & scoring tools\nGlazes\nBrushes and glazing tools\n\nCost: $150\, includes two sessions\, all materials and firing.Pickup: Sunday\, October 11\, 2-4pm pick up container at the Gresham Japanese Garden Kyoudou Center\, or make arrangements by sending a message to Sue@greshamjapanesegarden.com.

Learn about the importance of timing\, balance\, and health in creating beautifully structured pine trees. \nLocation: This workshop will take place Bentwood Tree Farm in Boring\, Oregon.\nLearn how to: \n\nIdentify and manage the apical candle\nDetermine which candles to remove for ideal structure\nKnow when to break versus when to remove the entire candle\nCombine candling\, needle pruning\, and branch pruning for healthy growth\nUnderstand how each technique affects the tree’s energy and growth pattern\n\nLaura will work on a variety of pine species at her farm during this in-person workshop. Bring your gloves — Laura may turn the class into a collaborative session! \nWhether you’re a home gardener or a landscape professional\, this course offers high-level pruning techniques to candle pines for successful structure. \nThis workshop is certified by the Oregon Landscape Contractors Board. Licensed landscape construction professionals receive three Continuing Education Hours (CEH).

SUMMARY:Pine Pruning for Character
DESCRIPTION:Watch Laura Dufala with Bentwood Tree Farm unlock the hidden character of pine trees\, both for the aesthetics and the health of the pine tree. Laura will work on black\, white\, and shore pines on Tsuru Island. \nLaura Dufala\nLaura arrived in the Willamette Valley after growing up on the family’s potato farm in Southeastern Idaho\, the last of fourteen kids! She loved the beauty and solitude of the farm and nearby mountains. Those connections are expressed in her trees\, her art\, and her gardens. \nLaura feels very fortunate to live in the Pacific Northwest where the soil so rich and fertile grounds\, because of the Glacier Lake Missoula Floods. \nShe has work in it the industry for many years. She has shared her extensive plant knowledge and creative energy with retail and wholesale nurseries in the Portland area. It was upon finding choice ground in Boring\, Oregon that she began pouring her artist talents into Black Sheep Nursery\, focusing on Bonsai and Niwaki. When not sculpting pine trees she’s in a studio sculpting clay or carving wood. \nHer other passions center around her family\, veggie gardens\, and fine food.
